Harley From World Vision

This afternoon we were fortunate enough to be visited by Harley from World Vision.

We talked about what we think about when we think of the Pacific Islands.

Harley brought up the term Climate Change. We talked about rising sea levels, extreme weather, flooding, people losing homes and crops. This is such a huge challenge for many places in the Pacific. Harley showed us photos from the Solomon Islands where houses have been ruined by water levels rising. One man, Timothy, has refused to leave his house! He is a part of the place and wants to die there.

We talked about how rising sea levels also effect us here.

We shared with Harley the stories that Elodie shared with us.

We know that we contribute to climate change more than the people of the Pacific Islands, so what can we do to help change this?

  • It is caused by many things - rising CO2 emissions, pollution, cars, food wastage, increasing carbon emissions, overuse of landfill, oil spills, increasing hole in the ozone layer, people!
  • Jacinda Ardern has received a petition signed by 45,000 people asking the government to talk about how NZ could stop drilling for oil
  •  We could find out more about what we could do to stop climate change growing so much
  • Maybe we could write to Ruth Dyson, James Shaw or Jacinda Ardern to tell them our thoughts on how we could help
  • We could bike, scoot or walk to school and try to use our cars less
  • We could turn off our lights or electricity that we are not using at that time
  • Per person NZ is one of the worst contributors to climate change
  • We could eat less meat and dairy products

We know that there are no simple answers but we can make a difference.

Table Tennis Lunchtimes

With a wet day things can get a little bit crazy in Navigators 2. Luckily our saviour, Jack, bought in his table tennis set! During lunch and morning tea the competition commenced. Our current Kings of the Table are Zack with 19 wins, Nate with 3 wins, Aaron with 1 win and Lilly with 1 win too.

Check Out Grace's Maths!

We are so proud of Grace's maths skills that were on display today - adding whole numbers and decimals, complex subtraction, all while working independently as the rest of her group were away. Ka Pai Grace!!

Amazing Jack!

Jack came to school toay, knowing that we would be stuck inside, with a table tennis set! Wow Jack, what superb initiative. Zack has won eight games in a row but was then defeated by newly crowned champion Nate!

Keep checking in for the Navigators Two table tennis championships!!

Tongan Tapa

Today we were fortunate enough to be able to look and touch a special Tapa from Tonga. One of our cleaners, Cecelia, allowed us to borrow her own Tapa.

The atmosphere in our room was incredibly calm and respectful during this time.

Maths at Home

Ms Saxon's maths groups are working really hard with some new concepts.

Last week we introduced algorithms to help us with adding up.

Here is a video that explains really well what to do.

Our Squares group looked at the tricky version of subtraction algorithms. Here is a video.

Also, ask your children how they jump along the number line to subtract!
