We talked about what we think about when we think of the Pacific Islands.
Harley brought up the term Climate Change. We talked about rising sea levels, extreme weather, flooding, people losing homes and crops. This is such a huge challenge for many places in the Pacific. Harley showed us photos from the Solomon Islands where houses have been ruined by water levels rising. One man, Timothy, has refused to leave his house! He is a part of the place and wants to die there.
We talked about how rising sea levels also effect us here.
We shared with Harley the stories that Elodie shared with us.
We know that we contribute to climate change more than the people of the Pacific Islands, so what can we do to help change this?
- It is caused by many things - rising CO2 emissions, pollution, cars, food wastage, increasing carbon emissions, overuse of landfill, oil spills, increasing hole in the ozone layer, people!
- Jacinda Ardern has received a petition signed by 45,000 people asking the government to talk about how NZ could stop drilling for oil
- We could find out more about what we could do to stop climate change growing so much
- Maybe we could write to Ruth Dyson, James Shaw or Jacinda Ardern to tell them our thoughts on how we could help
- We could bike, scoot or walk to school and try to use our cars less
- We could turn off our lights or electricity that we are not using at that time
- Per person NZ is one of the worst contributors to climate change
- We could eat less meat and dairy products
We know that there are no simple answers but we can make a difference.
